Rozalyn Sephiroth Schwander

It has been three months since our great dane Sephiroth passed away (see previous blog entries for details). It was a huge adjustment for us not having him in our home. We still miss him dearly and get teary eyed from time to time thinking or talking about him. This past weekend, we were ready to put him to rest. We bought a young weeping willow tree and planted it on our farm. We spread Sehpiroth's ashes beneath the tree when we planted it. We call it our Sephiroth tree and hope that it will grow big and strong in the years to come just like our boy was.

On memorial day, we added another dane to our family again. We got her from a friend of Seph's breeder in Ohio. She is a merle like Seph was and is actually Seph's great niece, so it is nice to know that they are related, even if it is distantly. Here are some pictures of her when she was a week old and then 3 weeks old. It is amazing how quickly she has grown...she was already almost 25 lbs when we picked her up at 9 weeks old.

We decided to name our new puppy Rozalyn Sephiroth Schwander. When we picked her up from the breeder, the breeder asked that we choose an AKC registry name as well. She said that this litter's theme was "angel" so the name had to have something to do with angels. I am the type of person who believes everything happens for a reason, and this was just one of those signs that let me know that Rozalyn was meant to be a part of our family. We named our last dane Sephiroth after the One-Winged Angel who is an antagonist in Final Fantasy games. We always called him our one winged angel. Therefore, we decided to register Rozalyn as BNB's One Winged Angel in memory of Sephiroth. Here are some pictures of Rozalyn after we brought her home. She is 9 weeks old in the pictures.
Things have been going well with Rozalyn so far. She was timid at first and hid under our table, but now that she has been living with us for a little over a week, she is not shy anymore. She loves to play and snuggle with us. She is doing well with potty training and is sleeping through the night now without crying (although she does cry at 5:30am every morning to go outside). She had her ears cropped a few weeks ago so they will stand up straight. We started taping them last weekend so hopefully they will be standing on their own in no time. Seph's only took 2-3 months of weekly taping. It is a lot of work, but we love the results.

Last Sunday, we took Roz to one of Seph's favorite hangouts...they dog beach on Lake Michigan in Muskegon. She really loved walking the beach, digging in the sand, chewing on the grass and sticks and playing on the shore in the water. She was shy towards other dogs and people though, but this is all a part of her socialization training. We are trying to get her used to as many people, animals, sights, smells, and sounds that we can. Pictured below is Roz playing at the beach. We met another couple with a dachshund the same age as Roz. He tried to run and play with her, but she just ran from him. If he turned away from her though, she would sneak a sniff at him.

We are so happy to have Rozalyn in our family. She is a great puppy, and we hope to spend many years with her.
